FAIRFIELD TOWN INFORMATION
The area that is now the Borough of Fairfield was originally formed as Caldwell Township on February 16, 1798, made up of parts of Newark Township and Acquackanonk Township. It was incorporated as one of the state’s 104 original townships five days later through an Act of New Jersey Legislature. Portions of Caldwell Township were later taken to create the communities of Livingston, North Caldwell, West Caldwell, and others. On November 5, 1963, Caldwell Township was renamed Fairfield Township, and was reincorporated as a borough on June 8, 1964.
