The Township of Pequannock is actually older than our nation itself, as it was incorporated in 1740, having been originally settled in 1695. It is made up of two communities – Pequannock and Pompton Plains – each with its own post office. The township formerly included areas that became Butler, Boonton, Jefferson, Lincoln Park, Montville, Randolph, Rockaway, and Wharton. The name Pequannock comes from the Lenni Lenape name “Paquettahhnuakl,” meaning “cleared land ready or being readied for cultivation.”
