The Borough of Pompton Lakes was made up of portions of Pompton Township and incorporated on February 26, 1895. Pompton Township had been formed in 1797 from parts of Saddle River Township and Franklin Township (Bergen County), and became part of Passaic County in 1837. Pompton Lakes was the first community to split from Pompton Township to become a borough. Bloomingdale, Ringwood, and Wanaque followed suit in 1918, with remaining property becoming part of Pompton Lakes.
