Wayne - Life And Leisure

The Township of Wayne is named in honor of Anthony Wayne (1745-1796), who became a general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He was known as “Mad Anthony” Wayne due to his fearless attitude and daredevil leadership of his troops, as he was never afraid to take chances. The highlight of his military career came on July 15, 1779, when he led a surprise bayonet attack on the British fortification at Stony Point, New York, on the west bank of the Hudson River. Victory was gained in less than an hour. After the war, Anthony Wayne returned to his home state of Pennsylvania and served in state legislature for one year (1784) before moving to Georgia, where he was a delegate to the State Convention that ratified the Constitution in 1788.
