Cosmetic Dentistry and You
(by Dr. Peter Brusco - April 30, 2010)
Cosmetic dentistry means different things to different people. Many believe that it is out of their reach and only for the rich and famous. Cosmetics merely means to beautify or improve the appearance of something. There are things dentists do on a restorative basis that improve the look of our teeth. Having a more youthful look, replacing missing teeth, removing silver fillings or going the whole nine yards for that “Hollywood” smile are all measures that are considered “cosmetics”.
The most conservative and inexpensive way to start is to whiten your teeth. A prescription strength peroxide formula is dispensed from the dentist and delivered through a home tray kit. It is the easiest, most non-invasive thing to do, and completely reversible. The best results are achieved after a cleaning. Lots of people have enjoyed the change this makes to their smile, without the fuss and involvement in an operative dental procedure.
The least invasive, next to whitening is a bonding. This involves the tooth being coated by a composite-resin material, the same material used for white fillings. This material can be sculpted to alter the look of your teeth as well as fill any cavities hiding there.
Next up are porcelain veneers. These are very commonly used to alter smiles in a more permanent way than a bonding can. They are also called laminates and consist of a fingernail thin porcelain that is bonded to the prepared tooth structure. It is a more invasive procedure since the tooth must be prepped by removing some structure.
Crowns now come in a variety of materials ranging from full gold cast to ceramic. They are similar to thimbles and cover the existing tooth structure. Crowns require more removal of tooth surface, however they are very durable and long lasting. They are used for many reasons other than pure cosmetics, most commonly to reinforce teeth that have been weakened by endodontic treatment.
Nowadays braces are not just for children anymore. A crooked smile can be straightened to an even perfect appearance on an adult too! Adult orthodontia, be it with traditional braces or the new invisalign trays are a great way to achieve the smile you wanted but your parents couldn’t afford. Adults are taking charge of their smiles as adults because they know the value of the impression it can make as a first impression. Whether interviewing for that dream job or just for personal reasons a healthy, beaming smile can make all the difference.
Dentures, either partials or a full set can restore healthy function to an otherwise compromised patient. While many consider them a last resort, they serve to help a patient retain their smile and good dental health. Chewing and enjoying food is a benefit as well as the cosmetic improvement having a full set of teeth brings.
As a dentist I have felt the depth of many rewarding experiences when I restore a smile. To see someone who has been ashamed of themselves for many years with a glowing happy smile is worth more to me than anything else. People perk up, go out and try things they would not have otherwise done, or be proud to have their pictures taken at a special event warms my heart. Having a smile to be proud of and comfortable with can have a profound positive change on the way a patient perceives themselves. This is one of the perks of my job I enjoy most. Good, healthy teeth are good for everyone, and I am always there to help you achieve one.
